J.W. Filshill Ltd. was established in 1875.
At this time its main business was manufacturing confectionery. In the mid 50's the business opened a 'cash & carry' operation which developed into delivered goods in the 60's. As the 'cash and carry' and 'delivered goods' businesses developed it became uneconomical to manufacture confectionery and this aspect of the business ceased in 1986. The Company has grown rapidly over the last 20 years but is still very much a "family business". The present turnover is in excess of £150 Million.
The product range is continually expanding and includes confectionery, soft drinks, crisps, wines, spirits and beers, and groceries. Recently a chilled section has been added to make the range more comprehensive.
The Company are members of Key Lekkerland and Sugro Groups and benefit from buying agreements and group sales contracts.
The number of customers is increasing daily. Filshill has over 2000 retail Cash and Carry and Delivered Goods customers and, in addition, services a number of wholesalers and has several large contracts.
More than 100 retailers have joined the Key 'Symbol Group' and benefit from working in partnership with Filshill. This aspect of the business is developing rapidly.
The Company moved to the present premises in Hillington during 1994 and has expanded the warehouse twice since then. There is also a sales office in Edinburgh. The total workforce now exceeds 250 people.
Filshill's main strategy is to be a 'One Stop' supplier for existing customers, and to develop its customer base by providing an efficient and flexible service. A central aspect of this strategy is to be leading edge users of IT in our area of business.
